We at Ganesha Bazaar have been manufacturing and distributing our gypsy and tribal designs for the last 15 years. We travel all over India ourselves in search of the most beautiful and colorful fabrics. By hand selecting such materials as richly embroidered saris, we are able to create dancewear and clothing that inspire the feminine spirit. This has always been our goal… to create something for women that not only is eye-catching, but also stimulates the soul.

In the spring of 2004, Habib met Nitash and Ajita, the founders and then owners of Ganesha Bazaar. Nitash and Ajita passed on the Ganesha Bazaar business to Habib in Spring of 2005.

Ganesha Bazaar was born years ago when Nitash Morano met German-born Ajita on an ashram in India. It was love at first sight. It wasn’t long before we were traveling the world together and getting married. We only started Ganesha Bazaar, of course, to make a living, but mostly so we could spend more time together.

Ajita had previously imported fabrics and some costumes to bellydancers in Germany, where interest in bellydance was growing due to the Middle Eastern influence of the local Turkish and Egyptian populations. So we decided to see if there was a bellydance scene in America. Like true gypsies we first started selling our bellydance clothes out of a VW camper van while we were homeless. We drove from state to state meeting bellydancers and teachers by day and camping out of the van by night. For a while without a home base, Ganesha Bazaar didn’t even have a phone or mailing address. (This was before cell phones and emails.) After a short time in Seattle, we eventually settled in Sedona, Arizona.

When in India, we like having a real hands-on designing experience, because we want to create the most aesthetically pleasing product possible. Our “Sari Wallas” travel to all corners of India searching for these rare embroidered silks. Often we go through thousands of these saris at a time to select only the most beautiful. Even so this always takes a lot of time, we don’t mind since we love India so much. It has such a timeless, rich culture that it always nourishes the soul, no matter how dirty and polluted it may be. We also don’t mind these physically challenging trips, since it is one way we are contributing to the growing bellydance community. And that’s worthwhile in itself.

Many people have asked us why we chose “Ganesha Bazaar” for our business name. We chose Ganesha, because he is the Hindi elephant God of fortune and luck. It was our own way of blessing our business. To us the name also symbolized “a new beginning”.

Over the years we’ve grown quite a bit, in our inner world as well as our outer world. Every year turns out to be a new chapter in the ever-unfolding story of Ganesha Bazaar.
